How Pack Air Simplified Complex Pallet-Handling Projects with Axelent Guarding

Pack Air, based in Neenah, Wisconsin, designs and manufactures custom conveyor and specialty equipment for the consumer-packaged goods industry and other industrial manufacturers. Over the past decade, the company has expanded into complete pallet-handling systems, which required a more efficient and scalable approach to safety guarding.

The Challenge: Simplifying Safety Without Compromising Quality

As Pack Air’s systems grew larger and more complex, their in-house, custom-built guarding became a burden.

“While we are perfectly capable of creating our own guarding solutions, it’s not the best use of our resources,” said Michael Sohn, General Manager of Pack Air.

Designing and manufacturing guarding internally was time-consuming and costly, particularly for large-area perimeter protection. Pack Air needed a partner who could provide a flexible, cost-effective, and compliant solution without adding to their engineering workload.

The Axelent Solution: Modular Guarding and Proactive Support

Pack Air turned to Axelent for an integrated safety system. Axelent worked closely with the Pack Air team to review layouts, provide complete kits based on their drawings, and ensure compliance with safety standards.

The result was a modular guarding system that was easy to install, reconfigure, and ship. Axelent’s support on the front end, like helping Pack Air’s engineers learn the product line and providing pre-assembled kits, made a significant difference.

“That level of support was something other catalog suppliers weren’t willing to do,” Sohn explained.

Easy Setup and Testing

As an OEM, Pack Air often sets up Axelent guarding in a temporary environment for testing and quality checks before systems are shipped. Many integrators follow the same approach: assembling both machinery and safety protection on-site to demonstrate and verify performance for customers. Once approved, everything is disassembled, shipped, and reinstalled at the customer facility using Axelent’s clear instructions. This process ensures the guarding fits perfectly and integrates smoothly when the equipment is delivered.

Results: Efficiency, Cost Savings, and Zero Complaints

Axelent’s machine guarding has now become a standard on Pack Air’s projects. Key benefits include:

  • Reduced engineering workload thanks to ready-to-install kits
  • Cost savings from eliminating the need to custom-fabricate guarding
  • Streamlined compliance with safety regulations
  • Reliable performance— hundreds of systems have shipped with zero complaints

Even though Pack Air, as an OEM, rarely sees the systems in final production, they are confident in the quality and customer satisfaction their projects deliver.
